Understanding Weight Loss Supplements

post2There are literally thousands of weight loss supplements on the market, and people who have a strong desire to lose weight as quickly and painlessly as possible sometimes turn to supplements for help.

Even though everyone knows deep down inside that the key to permanent weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight is through a good diet and proper exercise habits, we continue to look for ways that will allow us to lose more weight faster, with less effort.

The result of this desire to lose weight has been a bombardment of supplements in pharmacies and many other stores. Many health food stores and manufacturers are now making their own natural supplement. This is because many of the supplements that were put on the market in the 80’s and 90’s were found to have adverse side effects despite working well as weight loss supplements.  Others didn’t work well as a weight loss supplement and still had unwanted side effects.

The most common side effect that was caused by these diet pills was an increase in heart rate. Although this was rare side effect of typical proper use, it was a detrimental effect to the working of the body.

Vitamins are thought of as dietary supplements but the term can also include weight loss supplements.  Many weight loss supplements are advertised to be all-natural, which to most people means ‘all-good’.  It is astounding some people who would not dream of taking an aspirin, but will sometimes freely pop all-natural supplements in an effort to lose weight.

The thing is, the FDA has evaluated and approved aspirin, but may not have evaluated and approved the supplement.

The problem is that supplements don’t have to be evaluated and cleared by the Food and Drug Administration in order to be sold. This means that the drugs themselves could quite easily have adverse effects that we don’t yet know about yet.

Manufacturers are responsible for accurate testing and labeling, but the FDA only evaluates the supplement when the manufacturer submits their test data for evaluation.

Although it may be unlikely that one of these all-natural weight loss supplements will be poisonous in and of itself, it is possible that the long-term effect of taking such supplements could be risky. Especially when they’re used with other medications and/or supplements.

The only weight loss supplement I know of that has been evaluated and approved by the FDA is Alli.  I don’t normally recommend supplements for weight loss.  But, if you’re considering it, check with your doctor to make sure there are no underlying medical conditions and discuss using Alli.
